...

If Japan interest you, or you are just curious, I recommend you to start with a collection of essays Rekin z parku Yoyogi by great Polish writer Joanna Bator. She writes about Japan, mainly about people, subcultures and customs. More interesting are her stories, because Bator deal with culture  from the scientific anthropological point of view, which can be felt quite quickly reading a book. Moreover, Rekin... isn't the first Bator text about Japan, this author wrote Japoński wachlarz  undertooking also the subject of Japan. Bator lived many years in Japan and worked at Tokyo University. However, currently she lives in Warsaw.

Japanese Otaku

Last posts were about Korea, so it's time to breathe...

My dream is travel to Japan. This country fascinate and attracte me longtime. For now I recognize Japan only literary, but perhaps I'll visit  someday this island. Japan is today a melting pot of subcultures. One of them is otaku and their headquarters is the Akihabara district. Otaku is a person who fanatically passionate about Japanese popular culture like anime, manga, video games or movies. Otaku idols are not real people, but the products of artificial reality, literature, computer or comic. These are lil, warriors, monsters, French maids... All of this can be seen in Akihabara, where people parade through the streets dressed in these characters.
Otaku photograph them, eat in restaurants where characters from the anime give him a meal, buy additional figurines of favorite characters.
About 10 years ago, the district began to attract tourists. However, otaku don't like mainstream. Therefore there is a high possibility that their center will be moved to another, more secluded where nosy Europeans will not reach.
I don't think I'll see Akihabara in forme that we see it now ... :)

cheese and strawberries ice cream...

Coming back to Korean cuisine, it's, Asian cuisine, but a completely different than e.g. Japanese cuisine. Of course there are some dishes that resemble to a certain extent Asian delights whether it is Japanese or Thai, but generally Koreans have their own highly developed culinary culture. In the most of the traditional restaurant you have to enter barefoot. Flip-flops or slip shoes are very practical. :) In the Korean menu rice and meat in any form - reign. They eat them raw, fried, stewed and boiled. Amateur of soups will be in heaven because all the bars have their rich offer. Of course, ordering the main course, we are sure that we will be treated by side dishes which I've described recently. Instead of sandwiches Koreans eat snack similar in appearance to the Japanese maki sushi, but instead of raw fish in the middle, you'll find fried minced meat or chicken...

In short, cabbage, rice and meat construct the base of this kitchen.

I loved this quite rustic food, although I suffered from a lack of fruits. They are outrageously expensive. For one apple or one banana I had to paid about 10 zl...

BUT … find such masterpieces as ice cream flavored cheese isn't difficult in Korea.. :) As for the title of the post

How about Korean ''hollywood''?

So ... Korea also, has its own factory of stars. In Seul- 20 million metropolis there're. ''stables'' which create new talents. Studies work like barracks. Young people are recruited at a very young age. And they are subjected there to strict discipline. Singing, acting and dancing exercises are endless. This is where they create new girls and boys bands. The whole team supervise over their formation. Their career is programmed to the exact date. Five years of training, eight years on the stage. Then there are new. And so on... The kids say that they wake up very early. They practice, but also work on their exteriors. Plastic surgery doesn't surprise anybody. They are on the agenda. New talents enter on the stage only when they're ready 100 percent. There're not any shortcomings.

And how they look like? These are, of course, long-legged girl with perfect skin and similar hairstyles. The guys are stylized to young romantics. The whole of the industry for me is very homogeneous. Watching Korean TV some time passed before I began to distinguish individual teams. ...
And here they are:

Oh, what the funniest thing. Of course, American culture is very common in Korea. We can drink coffee Starbucks on almost every corner, or eat a Big Mac. In music this trend is very visible too. Singers weave in songs English texts. We listen finally mix of two languages. For me this causes quite

 comical effect...

K-POP c.d.

................

50 years ago Korea was compared to Ghana. Today is the fifteenth economy in the world. Trend for Korean products of mass culture began in the nineties. Then the country started selling the rights to series of Korean. Then Japan and China got to know the Korean pop music. Korean actors have gained idol status in these countries. The large numbers of Japanese began to visit the South Korean island: Namoseon, where the famous series Winter Sonata was filmed. Today the cultural industry is one of the four major industries of Korea. Country dynamically developing in all respects attracts investors and encourages others to buy domestic products, such as tablets or cars. The circle closes. The series often promote Korean brands, which only increases the demand for these goods...

Series, KPOP and computer games from South Korea conquering the world

Series, KPOP and computer games from South Korea conquering the world. That's the title of Gazeta Wyborcza's article. I came across this text quite recently. You can read the whole thing on the newspaper's website. It is available free of charge. I recommend. What sort of Korea it says? Cetainly not about Korea as a manufacturer of cars or phones. We're talking about a completely different sphere of life, namely we're talking about Korean pop culture. You don't know? Oh no ... I think that everybody knows Gangam Style ...which broke all records on youtube. The creators of the portal had to increase views limits, the program started freaking out and instead of adding, it started to subtract from the number of views. Gangam style achieved an impressive result of 2.32 milliard views.
But Korea has much more to offer. Gangam style is not the only Korean hit known throughout the world, or at least beyond the borders of this country within the Asian continent.
Koreans quickly understood that pop culture is an area that can be great advertisement of the country and can be a great marketing product supporting the development of large corporations and Korean brands. Development of pop culture has become a springboard for the country, which is appreciated not only in the world but attracts also people from afar.

I must admit that I am fascinated by the way of action of the entertainment industry in Korea, where great discipline reign. The prospects are far-reaching, and the birth of stars or singers or actors are not random.

Computer games...any problem?

Although computer games are the one of the largest and perhaps the most interesting export product of Korea, but the country has also a lot of problems associated with this. In Korea, as I mentioned in a previous post they are very, very popular. 90% of households in this country has access to broadband, which is one of the highest percentages in the world.  Internet addiction is, of course, this problem or and more specifically computer games addiction. Korea has been struggling with it for a long time. Many politicians are included in the debate on solving this trouble, because it affects a growing number of people. In Korea it's really a plague. In newspapers you can regularly read articles for exemple: A teenager who died from overwork, or parents who starved their infant baby because they played with abandon. These stories are real and not so rare..That's why the Korean government   often discuss on solutions. Recently they passed a law that prohibits minors to play after midnight. This is controlled arbitrarily and access to specific pages with games is blocked. Besides, there are plenty of social campaigns in which this issue is strongly highlighted.
It would seem that the problem is exaggerated. I asked Koreans what they think about this. Unfortunately they confirmed that.

National sport

Korea is perhaps a country like no other in the world right now in this respect. Probably is the only one country where computer games are treated so seriously. Korea is not only Samsung and Hyundai, it's also mecca of players. The greatest hits, the best games are made here, and this is where the biggest stars of this business born. Computer games are treated in Korea as a sport. Next taekwondo, games are the second the most important sport, followed with great verve by millions of Koreans. For the needs of the fans, special stadiums are built designed only for matches of computer games. They gather crowds in them. The most important events, tournaments, championships (for exemple: World Cyber Games) are accompanied by massive media interest. These events are organized by wile months. Anyway, the best players have the status of stars. They are idols of young and not only young Koreans. They earn considerable money. Of course, their success is often associated with much effort. But their trainers who often replace their families keep watch over their development and mental health.

Unfortunately, computer games have their other side of the coin. But more about this in the next post.

Korean English

If someone had asked me before leaving: Do Koreans speak English, certainly I would say that's for sure.. How wrong I was...

Korea reportedly has the highest degree of educating their society. It puts a huge emphasis on learning from an early age. Children, first in kindergarten, then in school and at the end: in high school, spend several hours learning there.. During my trip I was a witness of children in uniforms coming out of the school building about 7 p.m.! Yeah. The whole swarms of young people poured out on the streets. Although it's worth noting that the Asian streets are bustling and vibrant to very late hours at night. The city quiets down about 1 p.m./2 p.m., in contrast to our reality... There 7 p.m. is time for dinner, you can rest for a moment.

Going back to English, I have to admit that I was disappointed. Of course I don't mean something big, but the Koreans are rarely able to say anything in a language other than their mother tongue.  Sometimes it made our communication complicated, but in the end everything ended well. Despite the lack of familiarity of English Koreans gain many thanks to the extraordinary openness and willingness to help. With their help, often with their phones and electronic maps, we reached our destination. Korean streets are not so obvious ... :)

No kimchi no Korea

This year I visited South Korea. Country full of contrasts and surprises. Asia is great in many ways, but a it's long time to write. Now I can say: I will always associate Korea with a few things. Kimchi, pale pale and great mountains. Traveling in Korea is quite easy and safe. I think that this country is so underestimated, entirely groundlessly. Maybe or rather definitely because of the proximity of North Korea. But this small oblivion has got some advantages! Despite the fact that tourism is very well developed (although I know that this state of affairs is quite fresh, previously, before Korea has taken steps to develop this sector of the economy, it wasn't so hospitable) tourists from Europe we've met can be counted on the fingers. During almost three weeks it was maybe 35? Maybe...We felt very strange but also exotic. Korea has plenty to show and everyone will find something for everyone. For me it was: mountains, ancient civilizations, temples, and of course food. But if someone dreams of modern architecture diamonds, seeing the best players in matches of StarCraft or ... taekwondo also ll be happy.
But returning to kimchi, what is that?Kimchi originally existed in ancient Korea--nearly 3,000 years ago. It's a dish and without it Korean cannot imagine a meal. It's not a korean meal unless there's kimchi and banchan on the table. Banchan is meant to create balance in the meal in terms of saltiness, spiceness etc. It's sade dish. The number of banchan varies greatly, from minimum 3 to... .Kimchi is the most important, basic banchan. It's a fermented dish typically  (like our cucumbers :) )consisting of vegetables, red chili peppers, and a seafood-based sauce, which is then put in a stoneware pot to ferment in the sun. The most frequent ingredient is cabbage. I liked very much these little side dishes, which complement incredibly the flavors.

Refugees few words

Refugees few words

That what happens on Polish streets for several weeks makes me scared. We hear: Muslims threaten us, so we do not let them. This violence and vulgarity bring to mind Germany before the War. That's what says professor Michał Buchowski- cultural anthropologist (University Adam Mickiewicz in Poznan). I agree with him.

When it comes to the number of refugees it's hard to compare Poland with others contries in Europe like Germany, Italy or Great Britain where newcomers constitue from 10 to 20 percent of population. In our contry is 1 percent what gives 380 000 people. It's quite big number next to 12 000 refugees which Poland could adopt.
People who fear of refugees, they often argue with statement that only men escape and it's suspicious. They don't know that refuge is full of torment. I can't imagine women with their children waden through the wire. Men escape because they are stronger and resistant. And certainly more than the fair sex. Few can decide to travel by miserable boat with dozens of people.

I don't understand my compatriots. All this fundamentalist slogans are awful and I'm ashamed for them. Poland still has a lot to learn in terms of tolerance. We are completely ethnically homogeneous country and each equality is seen as worse. Times are changing and Poland is becoming an attractive country. Also for refugees. We must take this into account.

Strawberries

Strawberries: full of good

Strawberries contain potassium, vitamin K and magnesium which are important for bone health.
They have alco anti-aging properties. Strawberries are filled with biotin, which helps build strong hair and nails. They also contain the antioxidant ellagic acid, which protects the elastic fibers in our skin to prevent sagging. Recently, studies show freeze-dried strawberry powder may help prevent human oesophageal cancer.
If you’re not already a fan of strawberries, you should be.:) But probably, I don't know any person who doesn't like this delicious.

I prepare today strawberries crumble. :)

The Age of Adaline

After miraculously ''remaining'' 29 years old for almost 80 years, Adaline Bowman (Blake Lively) has lived a solitary existence, never allowing herself to get close to anyone who might reveal her secret.
But a charismatic philanthropist Ellis Jones (Michiel Huisman) change her life. Adaline regains her passion and desire to love. Everything turn for the better... By the time...Things get complicated when a weekend with his parents (Harrison Ford!!!) threatens to uncover the truth.

Generally I expected more. The story recall a less complicated version The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Obvious logical questions are ignored. However, issues regarding her immortality were very strangely explained. Pseudo-scientific explanation didn't fit completely into the film. However, cast deserves attention. Blake Lively is hipnotic, even I don't know whether the reason is her beauty or her acting? In film we can also see Harrison Ford, already mature, but probably even better.
I am also sensitive to beautiful costumes and I wasn't disappointed :)

In total: the film medium, but if you want spend a time agreeably, not see the movie ambitious and demanding reflection, The Age of Adaline is perfect.

Duda

Why Poland voted on Duda? If you want to read an interesting interview on this topic, in the new Newsweek edition, journalist Aleksandra Pawlicka asks philosopher and publicist Agata Bielik-Robson, which I really appreciate, about that. She raises a very important matter. The fact that someone fought for freedom of our country, no longer counts today, especially in the opinion of young people. She uses the term ''combatant'' in the contexte of Komorowski. The argument of fight for Poland doesn't convince young voters. But why? What's important for the young generation? What motives guided them in choosing the president? All of this you can found in this conservation.

Water

Drinking water is very important, that's what everyone know. But in practice who drink 2 liters of water? And whether two liters is enough? How much water should you drink each day? In truth, that depends on many factors, inter alia your health, how active you are and where you live.
There's no ideal solution. Water constitute 60 percent of your body weight. We are made up of water. All processes depend on water.

-water flushes toxins out of vital organs
-carries nutrients to your cells
-provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues.

Lack of water can lead to very negative consequences. Dehydration can drain your energy and make us tired. That's why we need to remember to drink regularly. Of course water it's not just drinks and water, food also contains water. 8 glasses of water is daily total, but it's about all fluids you consume.

Summer is coming, then we're most prone to sweating and losing water. Drinking the right amount of water we will feel better and healthier.

Coffee TIME

The benefits of drinking coffee

I love coffee. I don't think that my day goes by without drinking some coffee. :) Black, white, cappuccino, and all other variations- all depends of the time and my humor. Recently, I came across an article which I really liked! My mom always say me that I drink it too much. Fortunately, the devil is not so black as he's painted. :)

…. Coffee Can Fight Depression and Make You Happier
Depression is a serious mental disorder that causes a significantly reduced quality of life. It is incredibly common and about 4.1% of people in the U.S. currently meet the criteria for clinical depression. In a Harvard study published in 2011, women who drank 4 or more cups per day had a 20% lower risk of becoming depressed .Another study with 208,424 individuals found that those who drank 4 or more cups per day were 53% less likely to commit suicide .

….Coffee May Lower Your Risk of Type II Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is a gigantic health problem, currently afflicting about 300 million people worldwide. It is characterized by elevated blood sugars in the context of insulin resistance or an inability to secrete insulin. For some reason, coffee drinkers have a significantly reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The studies show that people who drink the most coffee have a 23-50% lower risk of getting this disease, one study showing a reduction as high as 67%. According to a massive review that looked at data from 18 studies with a total of 457,922 individuals, each daily cup of coffee was associated with a 7% reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes .Bottom Line: Several observational studies show that coffee drinkers have a much lower risk of getting type II diabetes, a serious disease that currently afflicts about 300 million people worldwide.

Election...

Election official result: Duda 34.76%, Komorowski 33.77%

Tuesday morning, the PKW announced the final results of the first round of Sunday’s presidential election. A Big surprise. The opinion polls was showing completely different scores.

In total, Andrzej Duda won in 28 out of 51 electoral districts, with Bronisław Komorowski winning in the remaing 23.
Generally Duda dominated districts such as Małopolska, Podlaskie, Podkarpackie and Świętokrzyskie provinces. In the meantime Komorowski won Wrocław, Jelenia Góra with Wałbrzych, Łódź, Katowice, Poznań. Besides Poznań was him the biggest electoral circle. With 47.4% !
But, the greatest astonishment was Pawel Kukiz, real dark horse of this election with his 20.8%.

The presidential poll is a precursor to the parliamentary elections in October. We can well see the rise of the ‘anti-system’ candidates. Poland is tired of endless conflict PO/PIS.

Anyway, in two weeks a second ballot! Go to the polls!

Nazca

Nazca lines

Some time ago, Iza wrote on her blog about the place of her dreams. That inspired me a little bit. I thought, where I want to go really in my life? So, now, my first place to visit is Nazca. You have probably heard about this...

Spread over 500 sq km (310 sq mi) of arid, rock-strewn plain in the Pampa Colorada (Red Plain), the Nazca Lines are one of the world's great archaeological mysteries. Comprising over 800 straight lines, 300 geometric figures (geoglyphs) and 70 animal and plant drawings (biomorphs), the lines are almost imperceptible on the ground. From above, they form a striking network of stylized figures and channels, many of which radiate from a central axis.

The figures are mostly etched out in single continuous lines, while the encompassing geoglyphs form perfect triangles, rectangles or straight lines running for several kilometers across the desert.

The lines were made by the simple process of removing the dark sun-baked stones from the surface of the desert and piling them up on either side of the lines, thus exposing the lighter, powdery gypsum-laden soil below. The most elaborate designs represent animals, including a huge lizard, a monkey with an extravagantly curled tail, and a condor with a 130m (426ft) wingspan. There's also a hummingbird, spider and an intriguing owl-headed person on a hillside, popularly referred to as an astronaut because of its goldfish-bowl shaped head - though some believe it's a priest with a mystical owl's head. ...About Easter, one more time

About Easter, one more time

I want to go back once more time to Easter. Except mazurkas, table decoration takes me a long time. Usually I don't pay to much attention to it, or I eat in the city. But when it comes to Easter breakfast or Christmas Eve, I have a weakness for all those trinkets that embellish the table. :)
Luckily, my mom inhibits me effectively...in buying all this stuff.

Anyway...I can always watch...:)

Easter...

Easter, Easter and after Easter. :) Anyway, I love this season. Even if the weather wasn't so conducive, I spent this time wonderfully. Cooking, baking, talking with the whole family. Endless visits. Boredom? None of these things! Homemade cakes, stuffed eggs, salads and many others...I love the hand-decorate mazurkas.. and I do it myself every year of course. :) To prove I add one my pic... from this Easter... :)

Juicy...

I recently obsessed with fresh juices... for this reason, I bought a juicer a month ago :) I chose not expensive equipment because I don't know how long I was going to like it. Expense 200 zł. Taste heavenly. :) For a few weeks, I experiment intensively. I'm looking for new mixes, fruit and vegetable connections. Celery, beetroot and carrot are my top. So many vitamins and minerals. After drinking the juice of this, I immediately feel better. Don't know how much there's my subconscious, but it works.

A few days ago I found a cafe near the university...called JUICY. (Kosciuszki street) If you like such delights, there you will find them certainly. :)

Scandal related to Kamil Durczok

''Wprost'' published an article who accuses unanimously Durczor for sexual harassement. I was shocked. I was waiting for the response of the accused. But, the suspect holed up in his house and doesn't comment significantly accusations.

Anyway my oncle prepared beets, already well known to me, but in the form completely new. It was violet carpaccio. As soon as I got home I started to search the internet...
This is one of which i found...I'll try it soon. Maybe I'll show you results :)

Finally...
Oscar for polish cinema... :)

But it's not just next prize for Poland, next prize for this film. Many polish cinema's authorities consider that recent Oscar win for best foreign language film for Ida is a symbol of polish cinematography's renaissance.
During the last decad more films are produced, more and more people go to the cinema to see polish movies.

It's an important info, I hope that it's not just temporary change. I always try to keep up with novelty in polish cinema, Smarzowski, Szumowska or Komasa. But..about them...next post!

Ida is what about?

The film tells the story of a young orphaned woman, Ida, who is on the verge of taking vows to be a nun in the early 1960s when she discovers that she is Jewish and that her parents were murdered by a Polish peasant during World War II.

You saw it?

Eating for exams!

Eating for exams!

This title is taken from article read on BBC. The exams are nearer and nearer. In the past, particularly I remember my first session. It was so stressful. I was sitting at the desk till 3 am. I was drinking another cup of coffee or energeticist. After couple of days I was a wreck. Over time I learned that it's not good way, especially for my body and mind also. I'm the type of person who likes to sleep, otherwise I'm nervous. Now, I try to sleep at least 7 hours, this also applies to the time of exams. I drink Yerba Mate and eat nuts. :)
A few days ago I came across nice article.  It presents some useful advices during exams. 10 top products for four brain: wholegrains, oily fish, blueberries, tomatoes, pumpkin seeds, broccoli, sage and nuts.

I f you want read more, there are more useful information about every single product:

The Hundred-Foot Journey

....
Another film I ve'seen during the holidays is The Hundred-Foot Journey. It's a little in similar topic as the previous film. Cultural differences and transcultural understanding... I think it's great family movie solution. Idealistic, but very funny and pleasant. For me, it was important that Helen Mirren played the main role, wonderful actress with so many faces. Besides, theme of the kitchen is always attracting, so it was a lot of fun watching this film.

Qu'est-ce qu'on a fait au Bon Dieu?

Hi,

Happy new year!

During the holidays, I always forget about such mundane matters as the blog. :)
I was eating, resting and watching movies! Today I would recommend you one.
If you haven't seen it, you have to do it soon.

I'm talking about : ''Serial (Bad) Weddings'' ( french: ''Qu'est-ce qu'on a fait au Bon Dieu?'' ).

Firstly, film gained enormous fame in France. The film attracted over 200,000 viewers just on the first day! In France...ok, in other European countries also, but there's one problem. UK doesn't belong to them. To say nothing about USA...The film has been rejected by film distributors (american and british) who deem it politically incorrect and possibly racist!

I've watched it and I can say that I don't see there nothing extreme. But, maybe you have a different opinion? Watch and tell me.

interview

There is a fragment of interwiev with W.M. Amaro. Seems to me very intriguing. Maybe you want to read?

Describe your culinary philosophy in 5 words...
Nature, science, seasonality, creativity, honesty

How did you feel when you were awarded your first Michelin star?

It was a dream come true, after 22 years of working in the kitchen, as well as being a historical moment, as it was Poland's first Michelin star. Most importantly, Polish cuisine joined the family of great cuisines around the world and a new era was begun for Polish chefs...

What is your greatest insipiration?
Naturs in my major inspiration. I go foraging, hunting and fishing, as they allow me to have my mind and senses open to absorb as much as possible - I call it the art of observing nature. My food tells the whole story about what I observe.

What three things would you take to a desert island?
Knife, a fishing rod and a Bible

Wojciech Modest Amaro

This post will be dedicated to Wojciech Modest Amaro once again. But this time I will presente some facts about his person, his life and career.
Amaro is, next to Kurt Scheller, world-renowned polish chef and restaurateur. He was born 12 February in 1972 in Sosnowiec. He has graduated electronic technical school. However, he went to Great Britain and got a job in a restaurant. He practiced with chefs such as Alain Ducasse, Yannick AllenAbout, Ferran Adrià. In 2008, awarded by the International Academy of Culinary title "Chef de L'Avenir".
Then in 2011, he opened a restaurant Atelier Amaro in Warsaw, who in 2013 as the first restaurant in Poland, has been awarded a famous Michelin star. For this moment, this is the only polish restaurant to boast such an accomplishment. Amaro is more and more known in the world. He gets numerous invitations from whole world.

He is the author of two books: Nature and Polish cuisine Polish and Cuisine twenty-first century, which in 2010 was awarded the Grand Prix at the International Academy of Gastronomy in Paris.

I have both of them. Ofcourse they are special and traditional, but many products are almost unknown for me. However the beautiful edition of these books (photography, styling, wheel, paper) compensates me this difficulty. That's more album than a book from which I draw my daily inspiration.

In next post I'll tell a little about Amaro's philosophy. Why he cooks, where he searches ideas etc.

Let's eat an apple!

Let's eat an apple!

Apples are full of benefits. I love this fruit. We are lucky beggar, because Poland is capital of this plant. We have so many varieties of this fruit. Every Saturday, when I go on the market I can't control my desire to buy a few kilos. Immediately I have multitude of ideas how to prepare something delicious. I bake them with raisins and nuts. And I don't have any remorse, because it's healthy, full of vitamins, pectins and antioxidants.

In the margin, have you ever heard about that proverbe "An apple a day keeps the doctor away"?
